Antonia Raco, an Italian woman, was diagnosed with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) — the same progressive, fatal neurological disease known in the English-speaking world as Lou Gehrig's disease. There is no cure.
On August 2, 2009, she travelled to Lourdes as part of a pilgrimage with the UNITALSI association. After bathing in the spring waters that Mary had revealed to St. Bernadette in 1858, she reported that her symptoms vanished entirely.
The Lourdes Medical Bureau opened a dossier. Over the following sixteen years she was examined by panels of neurologists in Italy and at Lourdes. Her cure was found to be instantaneous, complete, lasting, and medically inexplicable. On October 11, 2025, the local bishop formally recognised it as miraculous — the 72nd Lourdes cure to be so recognised since 1858, and the most recent.
