Blaisette Cazenave — chronic ophthalmia healed at Lourdes
June 1858 · Grotto of Massabielle, Lourdes, France
Status: approved holy see

Blaisette Cazenave, a 50-year-old townswoman of Lourdes, had suffered for several years from a chronic suppurating ophthalmia — bilateral chronic blepharo-conjunctivitis with eyelid deformity — that had progressed to the point of near-blindness. Local treatment had failed and the local physicians had pronounced the condition incurable.

Hearing of the spring at Massabielle she went one day to wash her eyes with the water. The eyelids and conjunctivae returned to normal within minutes and the sight was completely restored. The cure was investigated by Dr. Dozous during the canonical inquiry of 1858–62 and was recognised by Bishop Laurence of Tarbes in his decree of January 18, 1862 — the third of the seven first recognised Lourdes cures.
