A sudden windstorm — common on the Sea of Galilee, ringed by hills that funnel air across the lake's basin — fell upon the boat at evening. The waves swept over the gunwales. The disciples, several of them lifelong fishermen, were terrified.
Jesus slept in the stern on a cushion. The disciples woke Him: 'Teacher, do you not care that we are perishing?' He rose, rebuked the wind, and said to the sea: 'Peace! Be still!' At once the wind ceased and there was a great calm. He turned to them: 'Why are you afraid? Have you still no faith?' They asked one another in awe: 'Who then is this, that even wind and sea obey him?'
