Danila Castelli of Bereguardo in northern Italy had suffered since 1980 from severe paroxysmal hypertension caused by a pheochromocytoma (an adrenal tumour). Surgery in 1982 removed the tumour, but the hypertensive crises continued — severe, life-threatening, and resistant to every drug combination her physicians at Pavia attempted. By the late 1980s she was severely disabled and had been judged untreatable.
She came to Lourdes on the Italian UNITALSI pilgrimage of May 1989. On May 4 she bathed in the piscines. As she emerged she felt a profound interior peace and an extraordinary physical wellbeing. From that hour the hypertensive crises stopped. She required no further medication. The Lourdes Medical Bureau and the International Medical Committee studied her for 24 years; the Bishop of Pavia recognised the cure as the 67th miraculous Lourdes cure on May 20, 2013.
