Esther Brachmann of Lyon was 15 in 1896 and had suffered for several years from tubercular peritonitis with discharging fistulae, gross abdominal distension, and severe cachexia. The Lyon physicians had judged her case beyond treatment.
She came to Lourdes on the Lyon pilgrimage of August 1896. Bathed in the piscines on August 21 she was instantly cured; the fistulae closed, the distension resolved within days, and she regained weight steadily. The cure was followed for over a decade by the Lourdes Medical Bureau and was recognised by the Archbishop of Lyon as the 22nd miraculous Lourdes cure.
