Gabriel Gargam — the dying postal clerk
August 20, 1901 · Grotto of Massabielle, Lourdes, France
Status: approved local bishop

Gabriel Gargam, a 28-year-old postal clerk on the Bordeaux–Paris train, was crushed in the head-on collision at Monts (Indre-et-Loire) on December 17, 1899. He survived but was left paraplegic, tube-fed (his stomach refused all natural food), and with the lower half of his body atrophied. After winning a substantial judgment against the railway, he lived as a hopeless invalid at his mother's home for over two years, having lost his faith.

His mother persuaded him to go to Lourdes in August 1901. He arrived in such weakness that he received Extreme Unction on the train. At Lourdes he was carried on a stretcher to the daily procession of the Blessed Sacrament. As the monstrance passed over him, he stood up — instantly, fully — walked to the Bureau des Constatations Médicales, ate a full meal, and went home cured. He lived another 52 years, dying in 1953 at age 82. The case, examined repeatedly by the Lourdes Medical Bureau, became one of the most-cited 'secondary' Lourdes cures (recognized locally by his bishop, though not among the 72 universally formally recognised).
