Mark records this episode early in the public ministry — Christ leaving the synagogue at Capernaum on a Sabbath, going to the house of Simon and Andrew, finding Simon's mother-in-law in bed with a high fever. Christ went up to her, took her by the hand, lifted her up; the fever left her instantly. She got up and began to serve them — the immediate, ordinary sign of a complete cure.
The remains of what is preserved as Peter's house — a 1st-century domestic structure that became the earliest Christian gathering-place in the world — lie beneath the modern octagonal Memorial of St. Peter at Capernaum, an unusual transparent church suspended over the excavation. The site has been venerated continuously since the 1st century.
