Joachime Dehant — twelve years of gangrenous ulcer
September 13, 1878 · Grotto of Massabielle, Lourdes, France
Status: approved holy see

Joachime Dehant of Gesves in the Belgian Ardennes had suffered since the age of seventeen from a chronic ulcer of the right calf that had progressed to true gangrene. The tibia was visible at the bottom of the suppurating wound; she had been treated unsuccessfully at clinics in Belgium and Paris. The smell was such that fellow pilgrims and conductors on the train to Lourdes complained.

On September 13, 1878 she was lowered into the piscines (the baths fed by the spring). When she emerged the wound was clean, the gangrene gone, and within hours the leg was covered with new pink skin. The cure was examined by the Lourdes Medical Bureau over thirty years before being formally recognised by the Bishop of Namur on June 30, 1908 — the 11th cure on the official list.
