Marie Bigot — arachnoiditis cured in two pilgrimages
October 8, 1954 · Grotto of Massabielle, Lourdes, France
Status: approved holy see

Marie Bigot of La Richardais in Brittany had suffered since 1950 from severe posterior-fossa arachnoiditis — a progressive scarring of the meninges at the base of the brain — that had left her completely deaf, blind in the right eye, and partially paralysed. The diagnosis had been confirmed by neurologists at Rennes; there was no available treatment.

On the Rennes diocesan pilgrimage of October 1953 she was bathed in the piscines and her hearing returned completely. The remaining symptoms persisted. The following year, on the pilgrimage of October 8, 1954, she was bathed a second time; this time the residual blindness, paralysis, and headaches all resolved. The cure (recorded as a single two-stage event) was examined by the Lourdes Medical Bureau and the International Medical Committee and was recognised by the Bishop of Rennes on August 15, 1956 — the 56th miraculous cure on the official list.
