Marie Borel, a French religious sister, had undergone multiple operations for tubercular peritonitis and was left with several open intestinal fistulae through which faecal matter discharged. She had been chronically septic and judged untreatable.
She came to Lourdes in August 1907. Bathed in the piscines on August 22, the fistulae closed and ceased discharging within hours; over the following days the abdominal wall completely healed. The cure was followed for many years and recognised as one of the cures of the official Lourdes list.
