Prophecies Fulfilled — Then Shall the Eyes of the Blind Be Opened

Then Shall the Eyes of the Blind Be Opened
Prophesied c. 700 BC; fulfilled c. AD 30–33 · Capernaum (the healing ministry), Galilee, Israel
Status: traditional

Isaiah described the day of God's coming in clinical detail: 'God himself will come and will save you. Then shall the EYES OF THE BLIND be opened, and the ears of the deaf shall be unstopped. Then shall the LAME MAN LEAP as a hart, and the tongue of the dumb shall be free' (Isaiah 35:4–6).

When the imprisoned John the Baptist sent disciples to ask, 'Art thou he that art to come, or look we for another?', Jesus answered not with a title but with Isaiah's own list: 'Go and relate to John what you have heard and seen. The blind see, the lame walk, the lepers are cleansed, the deaf hear, the dead rise again, the poor have the gospel preached to them' (Matthew 11:3–5). The answer is the prophecy, checked off item by item in the towns around this lake.

Matthew adds a second citation over the Capernaum healings: 'that it might be fulfilled which was spoken by the prophet Isaias, saying: He took our infirmities, and bore our diseases' (Matthew 8:16–17, citing Isaiah 53:4) — quietly connecting the healing ministry to the Suffering Servant who would carry more than sickness.
