Prophecies Fulfilled — Strike the Shepherd, and the Sheep Shall Be Scattered

Strike the Shepherd, and the Sheep Shall Be Scattered
Prophesied c. 520 BC; fulfilled AD 33 · Gethsemane, Mount of Olives, Jerusalem, Israel
Status: traditional

Zechariah's sword-oracle turns on the shepherd himself: 'Awake, O sword, against my shepherd, and against the man that cleaveth to me, saith the Lord of hosts: STRIKE THE SHEPHERD, and the sheep shall be scattered' (Zechariah 13:7) — a striking that, in the prophet's context, comes by God's own decree and issues in the refining and restoration of the flock.

On the walk from the upper room to the Mount of Olives, Jesus applied it to that very night: 'All you shall be scandalized in me this night. For it is written: I WILL STRIKE THE SHEPHERD, and the sheep of the flock shall be dispersed' (Matthew 26:31). Peter protested he would never be scattered; the Lord answered with the cock-crow prophecy.

In the garden below this hillside the armed band came with Judas, 'and then his disciples, all leaving him, fled' (Matthew 26:56; Mark adds the young man who fled naked). The scattering was total — and the same oracle's restoration came true as well: 'But after I shall be risen again, I will go before you into Galilee' (Matthew 26:32), where the scattered flock was regathered by the lake (John 21).
