Jairus, one of the rulers of the synagogue of Capernaum, threw himself at Christ's feet. 'My little daughter is at the point of death. Come and lay your hands on her.' Christ went with him. On the way, a woman who had suffered a flow of blood for twelve years pressed through the crowd, touched the hem of His cloak, and was instantly healed. Christ stopped: 'Who touched me?' — for He had felt power go out from Him. She came trembling and confessed.
While He was still speaking, messengers came from Jairus's house: 'Your daughter is dead. Why trouble the Teacher further?' Christ said: 'Do not fear, only believe.' He went on, taking only Peter, James, and John. At the house, where the mourners were already wailing, He put them all out. He took the parents and the three apostles into the inner room where the child lay. He took her by the hand and said in Aramaic: 'Talitha cumi' — 'Little girl, get up.' At once she rose and walked. He charged that no one should know — and that they give her something to eat.
