Six days after Peter's confession at Caesarea Philippi, Christ took the three closest of His apostles — Peter, James, and his brother John — up a high mountain by themselves. There He was transfigured before them: His face shone like the sun, His garments became white as light. Moses (the Law) and Elijah (the Prophets) appeared, speaking with Him about His coming Exodus at Jerusalem.
Peter, terrified and overcome, blurted: 'Lord, it is good for us to be here. If you wish, I will make three tents.' While he was still speaking, a bright cloud overshadowed them, and a voice from the cloud said: 'This is my beloved Son, with whom I am well pleased; listen to him.' The apostles fell on their faces in awe. Christ touched them: 'Rise, have no fear.' When they looked up they saw no one but Jesus only. By ancient tradition the mountain is Tabor in lower Galilee; some scholars argue for Mount Hermon further north.
