Christ — The Woman Bent Over for Eighteen Years

The Woman Bent Over for Eighteen Years
c. AD 29 · A synagogue of Galilee or Perea, Israel
Status: approved holy see

St. Luke (13:10–17) records this miracle, which he alone preserves. Christ was teaching in a synagogue on the Sabbath when He saw a woman who had been crippled by a spirit for eighteen years, bent double and unable to straighten herself. He called her and laid hands on her: 'Woman, thou art delivered from thy infirmity.' Immediately she stood upright and glorified God.

The ruler of the synagogue, indignant that Christ had healed on the Sabbath, said to the crowd: 'There are six days wherein you ought to work. In them therefore come, and be healed; and not on the sabbath day.' The Lord answered: 'You hypocrites, doth not every one of you, on the sabbath day, loose his ox or his ass from the manger, and lead them to water? And ought not this daughter of Abraham, whom Satan hath bound, lo, these eighteen years, be loosed from this bond on the sabbath day?'

His opponents were put to shame; the crowd rejoiced. Christ's description of the woman as 'a daughter of Abraham' bound by Satan reframes the Sabbath law: the day of rest from servile work is precisely the day to loose what Satan has bound.
