Christ — The Woman with the Hemorrhage — Healed by Touching His Cloak

The Woman with the Hemorrhage — Healed by Touching His Cloak
c. AD 29 · Capernaum (en route to Jairus's house), Israel
Status: approved holy see

St. Mark gives the fullest account (5:25–34). A woman who had been bleeding for twelve years — ritually unclean under the Law of Moses, untouchable, having spent her entire fortune on physicians without cure — came up behind Christ in the great press around Him, saying within herself: 'If I shall touch but his garment, I shall be whole.' She touched the hem; immediately the flow of blood was dried up.

Christ, knowing that virtue had gone out of Him, turned in the crowd and said: 'Who hath touched my garments?' The disciples thought it absurd — the crowd was pressing on every side. But He looked round to see who had done it. The woman, fearing and trembling, fell down before Him and told Him the whole truth. He answered: 'Daughter, thy faith hath made thee whole: go in peace, and be thou whole of thy disease.'

The miracle is sandwiched, in Mark, within the raising of Jairus's daughter — the two miracles together a single great sign that the touch of Christ heals the unclean and even raises the dead. Tradition (Eusebius, HE 7.18) identifies the woman as Veronica of Caesarea Philippi.
