The Angelus
A meditation on the Incarnation prayed three times a day at the ringing of the church bell — at six, noon, and six.

At 6 AM, 12 noon, and 6 PM. Replaced by the Regina Caeli during Eastertide.
The threefold ringing of the bell to mark the Angelus emerged in stages. The 11th-century Cluniacs sounded a bell at Compline to recall Mary's compassion; by the 13th century the Franciscans added a morning bell to recall the Annunciation; and by the 14th century a noon bell was widely rung to recall the Passion. The three bells were combined into a single triple Angelus by Pope Callixtus III in 1456 as an appeal for prayers against the Turkish advance.
The full text — three versicles with three Hail Marys, a closing prayer, and a Gloria — was formalized in the breviary of 1612. The Regina Caeli replaces it during Easter season.
Pope Francis continues the tradition of leading the Angelus from the window of the Apostolic Palace at noon each Sunday — a tradition begun under Pius XII.
