Credo in Deum Patrem omnipotentem,
Creatorem caeli et terrae.
Et in Iesum Christum, Filium eius unicum, Dominum nostrum,
qui conceptus est de Spiritu Sancto,
natus ex Maria Virgine,
passus sub Pontio Pilato,
crucifixus, mortuus, et sepultus,
descendit ad inferos,
tertia die resurrexit a mortuis,
ascendit ad caelos,
sedet ad dexteram Dei Patris omnipotentis,
inde venturus est iudicare vivos et mortuos.
Credo in Spiritum Sanctum,
sanctam Ecclesiam catholicam,
sanctorum communionem,
remissionem peccatorum,
carnis resurrectionem,
vitam aeternam.
Amen.

Creator of heaven and earth,
and in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord,
who was conceived by the Holy Spirit,
born of the Virgin Mary,
suffered under Pontius Pilate,
was crucified, died, and was buried;
he descended into hell;
on the third day he rose again from the dead;
he ascended into heaven,
and is seated at the right hand of God the Father almighty;
from there he will come to judge the living and the dead.
I believe in the Holy Spirit,
the holy catholic Church,
the communion of saints,
the forgiveness of sins,
the resurrection of the body,
and life everlasting.
Amen.

When the Prayer is Said

At the start of every Rosary; at every Easter Vigil renewal of baptismal promises; at the opening of the Office of Readings.

History & Background

By the second century the Roman Church was using a short baptismal interrogation — 'Do you believe in God the Father? Do you believe in Christ Jesus? Do you believe in the Holy Spirit and the holy Church?' — to which catechumens replied 'I believe.' The Apostles' Creed grew from that practice. The earliest fragments are in St. Hippolytus's Apostolic Tradition (c. 215).

By the fourth century a fuller form had emerged, and tradition assigned each of its twelve articles to one of the Twelve Apostles. The final wording was fixed in Gaul and Spain by c. 700 and adopted across Latin Europe.

The Apostles' Creed is prayed at the start of every Rosary; in the renewal of baptismal promises at every Easter Vigil; and at the beginning of the Liturgy of the Hours each day. Where the Mass uses a creed it is normally the longer Nicene-Constantinopolitan Creed.
