R. And hast made us, for our God, a kingdom. Let us pray. Almighty and everlasting God, who hast appointed thine only-begotten Son the Redeemer of the world, and willed to be appeased by his Blood: grant, we beseech thee, that we may so venerate with solemn worship the price of our salvation, and through its power be so defended against the evils of the present life on earth, that we may rejoice in its fruit for ever in heaven. Through the same Christ our Lord. Amen.
The Litany of the Most Precious Blood
The Catholic litany on the Most Precious Blood of Jesus Christ — approved by Pope St. John XXIII on February 24, 1960.
Daily during the month of July (the month of the Most Precious Blood); on Fridays; at the feast of the Most Precious Blood (July 1 in the traditional Roman calendar); as a private devotion in times of grave spiritual or temporal crisis.
The Litany of the Most Precious Blood is the newest of the major Catholic litanies — composed in the mid-20th century and approved for public liturgical use by Pope St. John XXIII on February 24, 1960. The litany was a personal devotion of John XXIII, who encouraged a renewal of the medieval Catholic devotion to the Precious Blood.
The litany invokes Christ under 24 titles drawn from the Blood that he shed: the Blood of Christ in the Circumcision, the Blood in the Agony of Gethsemane, the Blood in the Scourging, the Blood in the Crowning with Thorns, the Blood on the Way of the Cross, the Blood from the Five Wounds, the Blood and Water from the Pierced Side, the Blood of the Eucharistic Chalice, the Blood as the price of our redemption.
