Magnificat anima mea Dominum

The Magnificat

Mary's hymn of praise at the Visitation (Lk 1:46–55) — the canticle sung at Vespers every evening of the year.

The Prayer · Multiple Versions
Latin · Original
Magnificat anima mea Dominum,
et exsultavit spiritus meus in Deo salutari meo,
quia respexit humilitatem ancillae suae:
timentibus eum.
Fecit potentiam in brachio suo:
dispersit superbos mente cordis sui.
Deposuit potentes de sede,
et exaltavit humiles.
Esurientes implevit bonis,
et divites dimisit inanes.
Suscepit Israel puerum suum,
recordatus misericordiae suae,
sicut locutus est ad patres nostros,
Abraham et semini eius in saecula.
English
My soul magnifies the Lord,
and my spirit rejoices in God my Saviour,
for he has looked with favor on the lowliness of his servant.
From this day all generations will call me blessed:
the Almighty has done great things for me,
and holy is his Name.
He has mercy on those who fear him
in every generation.
He has shown the strength of his arm,
he has scattered the proud in their conceit.
He has cast down the mighty from their thrones,
and has lifted up the lowly.
He has filled the hungry with good things,
and the rich he has sent away empty.
He has come to the help of his servant Israel,
for he has remembered his promise of mercy,
the promise he made to our fathers,
to Abraham and his children forever.
Spanish
Proclama mi alma
la grandeza del Señor,
se alegra mi espíritu en Dios,
mi salvador;
porque ha mirado la humillación
de su esclava.
Desde ahora me felicitarán
todas las generaciones,
porque el Poderoso ha hecho
obras grandes por mí:
su nombre es santo,
y su misericordia llega a sus fieles
de generación en generación.
Él hace proezas con su brazo:
dispersa a los soberbios de corazón,
derriba del trono a los poderosos
y enaltece a los humildes,
a los hambrientos los colma de bienes
y a los ricos los despide vacíos.
Auxilia a Israel, su siervo,
acordándose de la misericordia
–como lo había prometido a nuestros padres–
en favor de Abrahán
y su descendencia por siempre.
Gloria al Padre, y al Hijo,
y al Espíritu Santo.
Como era en el principio,
ahora y siempre,
por los siglos de los siglos.
Amén.
Italian
L'anima mia magnifica il Signore
e il mio spirito esulta in Dio,
mio salvatore,
perché ha guardato l'umiltà
della sua serva.
D'ora in poi tutte le generazioni
mi chiameranno beata.
Grandi cose ha fatto in me
del loro cuore;
ha rovesciato i potenti dai troni,
ha innalzato gli umili;
ha ricolmato di beni gli affamati,
ha rimandato i ricchi a mani vuote.
Ha soccorso Israele, suo servo,
ricordandosi della sua
misericordia, come aveva promesso ai nostri padri,
ad Abramo e alla sua discendenza,
per sempre.
Gloria al Padre e al Figlio
e allo Spirito Santo.
Come era nel principio, e ora e sempre
nei secoli dei secoli. Amen.
French
Mon âme exalte le Seigneur,
exulte mon esprit
en Dieu, mon Sauveur!
Il s’est penché
sur son humble servante;
désormais, tous les âges
me diront bienheureuse.
Le Puissant fit pour moi des merveilles;
machtvolle Taten:
Er zerstreut, die im Herzen voll Hochmut sind;
Amen.
When the Prayer is Said

Daily at Vespers (Evening Prayer); also the canticle on the Feast of the Visitation.

History & Background

When Mary went to visit Elizabeth — both of them mysteriously expecting — Elizabeth greeted her as 'the mother of my Lord.' Mary's reply, recorded by Luke at 1:46–55, is the Magnificat: a song of God's mercy and reversal that echoes the song of Hannah from 1 Samuel 2 and weaves the Old Testament prophets through the New Covenant.

The Magnificat has been sung at the evening hour (Vespers) of the Liturgy of the Hours since at least the 6th century in the Latin Church. Every Catholic priest, religious, and millions of lay faithful pray it daily.

The text condemns the proud and exalts the lowly. Under various dictatorships of the twentieth century (Argentina, Guatemala, the East Bloc) the public proclamation of the Magnificat was sometimes banned.
