PRAYER FOR EACH DAY O glorious Teresa of the Infant Jesus, through whose unshaken confidence God was so glorified, obtain for me the same filial trust and love which animated thy innocent heart and soul. Grant that I may practise self-abnegation, patience and confidence, and that my confidence may be a fountain of blessings which God pours out upon me. As confidence was for thee the key to the greatest treasures of God, so may it induce me to throw myself into my Saviour's arms and say with David: 'In Thee, O my God, I put my trust, let me not be confounded.' Amen. (Here name the intention.) FIRST DAY — FAITH Almighty God and Creator of all things, who to banish from human hearts lukewarmness in Thy service and inflame souls in divine love, hast enriched the soul of Thy Little Flower with such unshaken faith that she desired most ardently to give her life for Thee: I beseech Thee, by the merits of the lively faith of St. Teresa of the Infant Jesus, to infuse into my soul such an ardent faith that I may firmly believe all the truths taught by the Holy Catholic Church, and practise all the virtues until death. Our Father, Hail Mary, Glory be. (On the following days the same prayer is made for hope, charity, humility, obedience, purity, patience, zeal for souls, and confidence in God's mercy, each with an Our Father, Hail Mary and Glory be.) Let us pray. O Lord, who hast said: Unless ye become as little children, ye shall not enter into the kingdom of heaven, grant unto us, we beseech Thee, so to follow the footsteps of blessed Teresa, virgin, in lowliness and simplicity of heart that we may gain everlasting rewards. Who livest and reignest with God the Father, in the unity of the Holy Ghost, world without end. Amen.
Novena to St. Thérèse of the Child Jesus, the Little Flower
The novena American parishes prayed in the year of her canonisation, 1925: a daily prayer for her confidence, a prayer for each day beginning with faith, and the collect of her Mass — 'Unless ye become as little children'.
22–30 September before her feast; for the missions; for priests, whom she prayed for as a Carmelite; for a 'shower of roses'.
Thérèse Martin died at Lisieux on 30 September 1897, aged twenty-four, promising to 'spend my heaven in doing good upon earth'; her Story of a Soul went round the world, and Pius XI canonised her on 17 May 1925 and made her patroness of the missions two years later. The novena here is the one Callan and McHugh printed for parishes in the same year, 1925: a daily prayer for the confidence that was the whole of her 'little way', and a prayer for each of the nine days — the first, given here, for faith. The collect is that of her Mass.
Her own Act of Oblation to Merciful Love, which the novena recommends, is on this site as its own prayer. The novena is made from 22 to 30 September, before her feast on 1 October (3 October before 1969), and the 'shower of roses' she promised is asked for in the prayer to her that this site also carries.
A novena is nine consecutive days (or nine consecutive weeks of one fixed day) of the same prayer for the same intention; a day missed breaks it, and it is begun again. Confession and Communion during the nine days, or on the last, were the ordinary conditions for the plenary indulgence.
