Prayer — Novenas

Novena to the Holy Guardian Angels

Indulgenced by Pius IX, 5 January 1849 and 26 November 1876; prayer from Our Favorite Novenas, 1897

Nine days before 2 October: 'teach us to love, to pray, to combat on earth, and rather obtain for us instant death than permit us to commit one mortal sin.'

The Prayer
English · Original
PRAYER (each day)
O pure and happy spirits, whom the Almighty selected to become the angels and guardians of men, I most humbly prostrate myself before you, to thank you for the charity and zeal with which you execute this commission. Alas! how many pass a long life without ever thanking that invisible friend to whom they a thousand times owed its preservation. O charitable guardians of those souls for whom Christ died! O burning spirits! who cannot but love those whom Jesus eternally loved, permit me to address you in behalf of all those committed to your care, and to implore for them all in general a grateful sense of your many favours, and the grace to profit by your charitable assistance. And you, O guardian angels of sinners, loving guides of those unhappy mortals whose persistence in sin would embitter even your unutterable joys were you not established in the peace of God, oh! join me, I ardently beseech you, in obtaining their conversion. O faithful guides, holy spirits, ardent adorers of the Divinity, guardian angels of all creatures! protect us all; teach us to love, to pray, to combat on earth, and rather obtain for us instant death than permit us to commit one mortal sin. Obtain for us also, dear guardian angels, the favours we solicit in this novena.

(Here name the intention.)

Angel of God, my guardian dear,
To whom His love commits me here,
Ever this day be at my side,
To light and guard, to rule and guide. Amen.

V. Bless the Lord, all ye His angels.
R. Ye that are mighty in strength, that fulfil His commandments, hearkening unto the voice of His words.
V. He hath given His angels charge concerning thee.
R. To keep thee in all thy ways.

Let us pray.
O God, who dispensest the services of angels and men in a wonderful order, mercifully grant that our life may be protected on earth by those who always do Thee service in heaven. Through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
When the Prayer is Said

23 September to 1 October, before the feast of the Guardian Angels; for children; for the conversion of sinners.

History & Background

The feast of the Guardian Angels was extended to the whole Church by Paul V in 1608 and fixed on 2 October by Clement X in 1670. Pius IX indulgenced a novena before it — first Falcone's, in 1849, and in 1876 any approved form — with one hundred days each day and a plenary indulgence during the novena or the eight days after. The prayer here is that of Our Favorite Novenas (1897), and the daily Angele Dei is the prayer Pius VI indulgenced in 1795.

The manual adds a practice 'agreeable to Our Lord': nine acts of mortification, or nine Hail Marys, or nine genuflections before the Blessed Sacrament, in honour of the nine choirs of angels.

A novena is nine consecutive days (or nine consecutive weeks of one fixed day) of the same prayer for the same intention; a day missed breaks it, and it is begun again. Confession and Communion during the nine days, or on the last, were the ordinary conditions for the plenary indulgence.
