History & Background
The Regina Caeli (sometimes spelled Coeli) is one of the four great Marian antiphons of the Liturgy of the Hours, sung at Compline during Eastertide. Its origin is unknown but tradition assigns the prayer to a vision of Pope St. Gregory the Great (590–604), who heard angels chanting the first three lines around the image of the Virgin during a plague procession in Rome and added the fourth himself.
From the time of Benedict XIV (1742) it has replaced the Angelus from the Vigil of Easter through Pentecost Sunday inclusive.
