When the Prayer is Said

On the feast of the archangels; at the Annunciation; at the close of a novena to St. Gabriel.

History & Background

Gabriel's feast was placed on 24 March by Benedict XV in 1921, the day before the Annunciation whose messenger he was, and there it stayed until the calendar of 1969 gathered the archangels on 29 September. The collect of that Office is the Church's plainest statement of why Gabriel is honoured: of all the angels he was the one chosen to announce the Incarnation.

The Latin is that of the Breviary; the English of the antiphon follows the Raccolta's rendering of the parallel antiphon for St. Michael, and the versicle and collect are our own translation.
