Veni, Creator Spiritus, mentes tuorum visita, imple superna gratia, quae tu creasti pectora. Tu septiformis munere, digitus paternae dexterae, tu rite promissum Patris, sermone ditans guttura. Accende lumen sensibus, infunde amorem cordibus, infirma nostri corporis virtute firmans perpeti. Hostem repellas longius, pacemque dones protinus; ductore sic te praevio, vitemus omne noxium. Amen.
Come, Creator Spirit
The 9th-century hymn to the Holy Spirit sung at every ordination, every conclave, every papal coronation, and every solemn invocation of the Paraclete.
Come, Holy Ghost, Creator blest, and in our hearts take up Thy rest; come with Thy grace and heavenly aid, to fill the hearts which Thou hast made. O Comforter, to Thee we cry, Thou heavenly gift of God most high; Thou Fount of life, and Fire of love, and sweet Anointing from above. O Finger of the hand divine, the sevenfold gifts of grace are Thine; true promise of the Father Thou, who dost the tongue with power endow. Kindle our senses from above, and make our hearts o'erflow with love; with patience firm and virtue high the weakness of our flesh supply. Far from us drive the foe we dread, and grant us Thy true peace instead; so shall we not, with Thee for guide, turn from the path of life aside. O may Thy grace on us bestow the Father and the Son to know, and Thee through endless times confessed of both the eternal Spirit blest. All glory while the ages run be to the Father and the Son who rose from death; the same to Thee, O Holy Ghost, eternally. Amen.
Amen.
Pentecost; every ordination, conclave, council, consecration of a church, and beginning of a council or synod; on New Year's Eve.
The Veni Creator Spiritus is attributed to the Benedictine abbot and archbishop Rabanus Maurus (c. 776–856) of Mainz. By the 10th century it was firmly fixed as the Latin Church's principal hymn to the Holy Spirit, sung at Pentecost and at every solemn invocation of the Spirit's gifts.
It is sung at the opening of every conclave to elect a pope (the cardinals process into the Sistine Chapel chanting it); at every ordination of bishops, priests, and deacons; at every consecration of a church or altar; at every General Council of the Church; on the first day of the school year in Catholic universities and seminaries; and on New Year's Eve (to ask the Spirit for the year to come, attaching a plenary indulgence).
A plenary indulgence is granted to those who recite the Veni Creator publicly on the first day of the year and on Pentecost; partial indulgence on other days (Enchiridion of Indulgences, no. 60).
