Life

Colomba (Italian Angelella Guardagnoli) was born on February 2, 1467 at Rieti — at the hour of the Presentation of the Lord (the Feast of the Purification / Candlemas), the source of her religious name 'Colomba' ('Dove').

From early childhood Colomba displayed Catholic mystical-vocation signs. At the age of 19 (1486), she undertook the Dominican Third Order (Tertiary) vows and undertook the systematic ascetic-mystical discipline.

Around 1488, at the age of 21, Colomba migrated from Rieti to Perugia — the personal migration produced by her Marian vision-instruction. She spent the 13 years (1488–1501) at Perugia serving as the Dominican-Tertiary mystic-peacemaker of the Perugian city-state.

Colomba's ministry included: mediation between the contested Baglioni and Oddi Perugian noble factions (the political-ecclesiastical peacemaking that protected Perugia during the late-15th-century Italian Wars); personal charity to the Perugian poor; and mystical-ecstatic experiences (Eucharistic-inedia, bilocations, visions of the Blessed Virgin).

During the 1494 French invasion of Italy under King Charles VIII, Colomba personally interceded before Charles VIII at Perugia — securing the protection of the Perugian population.

She died at Perugia on May 20, 1501 at the age of 34.

Miracles & Phenomena
  • The Perugian peacemaking ministry

St. Colomba of Rieti's 13-year Perugian ministry (1488–1501) — the Dominican-Tertiary mystic-peacemaker of the Perugian city-state during the politically-volatile late 15th and early 16th centuries — establishes the Dominican-Tertiary lay-Catholic peacemaking tradition. Her mediation between the Baglioni and Oddi Perugian noble factions and her 1494 intercession before King Charles VIII protected the Perugian population during the Italian Wars period.
