Iwene (baptismal name Michael, religious name Cyprian) Tansi was born in September 1903 at Aguleri to an Igbo Catholic family. Ordained priest in 1937, Cyprian served as parish priest across the Onitsha Diocese for the 13 years.
In 1950, at the age of 47, Cyprian undertook the vocation of the Trappist monastic life — travelling to England to enter the Mount St. Bernard Abbey.
For 14 years (1950–1964), Cyprian lived at Mount St. Bernard as the 'planting-monk' vocation — preparing for the eventual foundation of a Trappist monastery in Nigeria.
He died at Mount St. Bernard Abbey on January 20, 1964 at the age of 60 — before the planned Nigerian foundation. Beatified March 22, 1998 by Pope St. John Paul II at Onitsha, Nigeria — the first Nigerian Catholic beatified.
One of the young Igbo Catholic altar-boys personally influenced by Cyprian Tansi during his Aguleri parish ministry was Francis Cardinal Arinze (Prefect of the Congregation for Divine Worship 2002–2008, one of the leading African Cardinals of the 21st century).
