Life

Dominic (Italian Domenico) Barberi was born on June 22, 1792 at Viterbo. In 1814, Dominic entered the Passionist Congregation (Congregation of the Passion, founded 1720 by St. Paul of the Cross).

From youth, Dominic received the vocational call to the conversion of England — the Catholic mission to the post-Reformation Protestant England.

In 1841, at the age of 49, Dominic arrived in England — establishing the first Passionist community at Aston Hall in the West Midlands.

For 8 years (1841–1849), Dominic undertook the systematic Catholic mission across England — producing the significant Catholic conversions of the Oxford Movement Anglican party.

On October 8–9, 1845, Dominic received into the Catholic Church at Littlemore near Oxford John Henry Newman (see his existing entry) — the reception of the most famous English Catholic convert of the 19th century. Newman's conversion established the Oxford Movement conversion-tradition — producing the conversion of hundreds of Anglican clergy and laity.

He died at Reading on August 27, 1849 at the age of 57. Beatified October 27, 1963 by Pope St. Paul VI.
