Life

Elisha son of Shaphat was plowing with twelve yoke of oxen at Abel-Meholah when Elijah passed by and cast his mantle upon him. He slaughtered the oxen and followed the prophet. After Elijah's ascension, Elisha asked and received a double portion of his master's spirit.

His ministry lasted some fifty-five years through the reigns of Joram, Jehu, Jehoahaz, and Joash. The Books of Kings record more miracles by Elisha than by any other prophet of the Old Testament — sweetening the waters of Jericho, multiplying the widow's oil, raising the Shunammite woman's son, healing Naaman the Syrian of leprosy.

Even his bones worked a miracle: a dead man cast into Elisha's tomb came to life on touching them (2 Kings 13:21).
