Eulalie Mélanie (religious name Marie-Rose) Durocher was born on October 6, 1811 at Saint-Antoine-sur-Richelieu in Lower Canada (modern Quebec). In 1831, Marie-Rose moved to Beloeil to keep house for her brother Théophile, a parish priest.
For 12 years (1831–1843), Marie-Rose served as parish housekeeper — famously establishing the first Canadian Ladies' Congregation of the Blessed Virgin at Beloeil.
In 1843, at the request of Bishop Ignace Bourget of Montreal, Marie-Rose founded the Sisters of the Holy Names of Jesus and Mary at Longueuil — the French-Canadian teaching congregation dedicated to the Catholic education of Quebec girls.
Marie-Rose served as Superior of the Sisters of the Holy Names until her death on October 6, 1849 at the age of 38 — on her 38th birthday. Beatified May 23, 1982 by Pope St. John Paul II.
