Life

Michael (Basque Mikhel, French Michel) Garicoits was born on April 15, 1797 at Ibarre in the French Basque country. Ordained priest in 1823, Michael served as seminary rector at Bétharram.

In 1835, Michael founded the Priests of the Sacred Heart of Bétharram — the French religious congregation dedicated to the Sacred Heart devotion and the priestly-mission ministry.

Michael served as Superior of the Bétharramites until his death in 1863. The congregation spread to Argentina and Uruguay during his lifetime.
