Life

Rose (Italian Rosa) Venerini was born on February 9, 1656 at Viterbo. In 1685, at the age of 29, Rose founded the Maestre Pie Venerini — the free public school for girls at Viterbo, institutionally the first free public girls' school in Italy.

Rose undertook the systematic expansion of the Maestre Pie Venerini across the Papal States. By her death in 1728, over 40 Maestre Pie Venerini schools were operating.

She died at Rome on May 7, 1728 at the age of 72. Canonized October 15, 2006 by Pope Benedict XVI.
