Life

Rutilio Grande was born on July 5, 1928 at El Paisnal in El Salvador. In 1945, at the age of 17, Rutilio entered the Society of Jesus. Ordained priest in 1959, Rutilio served as seminary formator at San Salvador and then as pastor at Aguilares.

Rutilio undertook the systematic pastoral engagement with the Salvadoran campesino (peasant) population — the pattern of the post-Vatican II Latin American liberation-theology social apostolate.

On March 12, 1977, while driving to celebrate the Saturday-evening Mass at El Paisnal, Rutilio was ambushed by a Salvadoran death squad — shot alongside two Salvadoran lay companions (Manuel Solórzano, age 72; Nelson Rutilio Lemus, age 16).

Rutilio's martyrdom directly triggered the conversion of St. Óscar Romero (see his existing entry, the newly-appointed Archbishop of San Salvador, Rutilio's personal friend) — the 'Rutilio Effect' that would produce the Romero prophetic ministry (1977–1980).

Beatified January 22, 2022 by Pope Francis.
