Anagni, a hill town fifty miles southeast of Rome and the birthplace of four popes (Innocent III, Gregory IX, Alexander IV, Boniface VIII), was a frequent papal residence in the 13th century. In 1294 a Eucharistic miracle is recorded at the cathedral — the consecrated host bled visibly during Mass. Pope Boniface VIII, then in residence at Anagni, witnessed the event personally and ordered the relic preserved.
