The Three Sacred Hosts of Andechs were originally given to the abbey by the Counts of Andechs in the 12th century, having been (per tradition) sent from Constantinople by Pope Leo IX. The hosts were lost when the abbey was destroyed in the 1240s and the mountain was abandoned. In 1388, during the reconstruction of the chapel on the Holy Mountain, the hosts were rediscovered in their original silver case, intact: two of them bearing dark stains in the form of the wounds of Christ's Passion, the third stained with the Cross.
Andechs has been a major Bavarian pilgrimage centre since the rediscovery. The relics are still venerated at the Benedictine abbey, which is also famous for its brewery (one of the oldest in Bavaria, supporting the monastery's charitable works to this day).
