Marian Apparitions — Our Lady of Banneux — Virgin of the Poor

Our Lady of Banneux — Virgin of the Poor
January 15 – March 2, 1933 · Banneux, Walloon Belgium, Belgium
Status: approved holy see

Just six weeks after the Beauraing apparitions ended, in a poor village in the Ardennes east of Liège, an eleven-year-old girl named Mariette Beco saw a luminous Lady standing in her family's garden. The Lady — beautiful, smiling, robed in white with a blue sash, a rose on her foot — beckoned her, and over the next seven weeks appeared to her eight times.

On the second apparition Mary led Mariette to a spring nearby: 'Push your hands into the water. This spring is reserved for me.' On the third: 'I am the Virgin of the Poor.' On the fourth she repeated: 'This spring is for me — for all nations — for the sick — to relieve the sick.' She asked for a small chapel — built within a year. The local bishop, Mgr. Kerkhofs of Liège, recognised the apparitions as authentic in two formal stages, the second on August 22, 1949. Banneux is now one of the world's major sites for the sick and disabled — over a million pilgrims a year.
