Sixteen apparitions of the Blessed Virgin Mary have been formally recognised by the Holy See — from the tilma of Guadalupe to the dancing sun of Fátima. They are signs of a Mother who comes to her children.

The Sancta Camisia Survives the Fire of Chartres
A catastrophic fire destroyed almost the entire Romanesque cathedral of Chartres — but the reliquary of the Sancta Camisia, the veil of the Blessed Virgin gifted by Charles the Bald in 876, was recovered from the crypt unharmed three days later. Its survival was read as the Virgin's approval of the new cathedral, and drove the fundraising for the present Gothic building.
The Vladimir Icon Turns Back Timur
As Timur (Tamerlane) advanced on Moscow, Grand Prince Vasily I ordered the ancient icon of the Vladimir Theotokos brought from Vladimir to Moscow. On the day it was met at the city gate — August 26, 1395 — Timur reportedly saw a vision of a radiant woman commanding him to withdraw. He turned his army south and never entered Muscovy.

Our Lady of Guadalupe
The Virgin Mary appeared to St. Juan Diego on Tepeyac Hill, leaving her image miraculously imprinted on his tilma. The cloak is still venerated; ~20 million pilgrims visit each year.

Our Lady of Leżajsk
The earliest Vatican-recognised Marian apparition in Poland. The Virgin appeared three times in a forest clearing near Leżajsk to a poor peasant named Tomasz Michałek, asking that a church be built on the spot.

Our Lady of Copacabana
A young Aymara convert named Francisco Tito Yupanqui — direct descendant of the Inca royal house — labored for years to carve a statue of the Virgin worthy of his village on Lake Titicaca. After repeated failures and a journey on foot to Potosí to learn the art, he completed it; it was enshrined at Copacabana on Candlemas 1583. Bolivia's national patroness.

Our Lady of Šiluva
The earliest apparition in Northern Europe formally approved by the Holy See. A weeping Madonna appeared to Calvinist shepherd children in a village that had abandoned its Catholic patrimony.

Our Lady of Good Success — Statue at the Conceptionist Convent, Quito
Between 1594 and 1634 the Blessed Virgin appeared repeatedly to Mother Mariana de Jesús Torres at the Conceptionist convent of Quito, giving detailed prophecies about the twentieth century. She asked that a statue be sculpted to her exact appearance. The finished piece was mysteriously completed by angels when the sculptor slept, and continues to be venerated in the upper choir where Mother Mariana lived.

Our Lady of Charity of El Cobre
Three sailors — the two Hoyos brothers and the slave-boy Juan Moreno, 'los tres Juanes' — were caught in a storm in the Bay of Nipe in eastern Cuba. They saw a wooden image of the Virgin holding the Christ Child floating on the waves, carrying a tablet inscribed 'I am the Virgin of Charity.' The skies cleared. The image is patroness of Cuba and was canonically crowned by Pope John Paul II in 1998.
The Kazan Icon — Defender of Russia (1612, 1812, 1941)
The icon of Our Lady of Kazan, discovered by a nine-year-old girl in the ashes of Kazan in 1579, was carried at the liberation of Moscow from the Poles in 1612, at Kutuzov's counter-offensive against Napoleon in 1812, and — as tradition holds — was flown around besieged Moscow in an airplane in 1941. Each occasion is treated in Russian devotion as an intercession of the Theotokos for the nation.

Our Lady of Caacupé
A Guaraní convert named José, fleeing hostile raiders, hid in the trunk of a yvyra'ro tree. He vowed to carve an image of the Virgin from the tree's wood if she saved him. The raiders passed without finding him. He kept the vow; the resulting statue is now Patroness of Paraguay.

Our Lady of Luján
A Portuguese settler in colonial Argentina sent for a statue of the Immaculate Conception from Brazil. Two were shipped; the oxcart carrying them stopped at the Luján River and would move only after the smaller statue was unloaded. Taken as a sign that the Virgin wished to remain, the statue became the Patroness of Argentina, Uruguay, and Paraguay.

Our Lady of Coromoto
The Blessed Virgin Mary appeared twice to Coromoto, chief of the Cospes tribe of the Venezuelan plains, who had been resisting the Christian message. At the second apparition Christ's mother handed him a tiny image of herself with the Child, on a fragment of parchment 27mm by 22mm — the 'Smallest Holy Image of Our Lady' venerated at the National Shrine of Guanare.

The Black Madonna and the Siege of Jasna Góra
During 'the Deluge' — the Swedish invasion that overran nearly all of Poland — the Pauline monastery of Jasna Góra held out for forty days against a Swedish army of some 3,000 troops with 170 defenders. The successful defense of the icon of the Black Madonna became the turning point of the war; the following year King John II Casimir crowned Our Lady of Częstochowa Queen of Poland.

Our Lady of Laus — Refuge of Sinners
The longest set of Vatican-recognised Marian apparitions in history: 54 years to a single shepherdess, Bénoîte Rencurel, in the French Alps. Approved by Pope Benedict XVI in 2008 — the first new apparition approved by Rome in over fifty years.

Our Lady of Aparecida
Three fishermen on the Paraíba do Sul, ordered to fish for a banquet honouring the visiting Count of Assumar, were having no luck. On the last cast Filipe Pedroso pulled up the headless body of a small terracotta statue of the Immaculate Conception; the next cast brought up the head; the next filled the boat with fish. The blackened statue has been the patroness of Brazil since 1930 and is enshrined in the Basilica of the National Shrine at Aparecida, the largest Marian basilica in the world.

Our Lady of Las Lajas
A widow and her deaf-mute daughter took shelter from a storm in a rock gorge of the Guáitara River near Ipiales. The girl spoke for the first time in her life, pointing at the cliff face: 'Mamá, the mestizo woman is calling me.' On the rock was the image — never painted, the pigment reaching deep into the stone — of Our Lady with the Christ Child, flanked by Sts. Dominic and Francis. The basilica is built into the gorge above the original cave.

Our Lady of La Vang
To Catholics hiding in the jungle from the persecution of 1798, a Lady with the Child promised to hear all who prayed on that spot, and showed them leaves to boil against the fever. Vietnam's national shrine; never formally judged.

Our Lady of the Miraculous Medal (Rue du Bac)
The Blessed Virgin appeared three times to a young Sister of Charity novice — St. Catherine Labouré — in the chapel of the Rue du Bac in Paris, entrusting her with the design of the Miraculous Medal. Over a billion medals have since been distributed.

Our Lady of Sant'Andrea delle Fratte — the Conversion of Alphonse Ratisbonne
Alphonse Ratisbonne — a twenty-seven-year-old Jewish banker from Strasbourg, openly hostile to Catholicism — accepted a Miraculous Medal from a friend as a dare. Idly entering the Roman church of Sant'Andrea delle Fratte on 20 January 1842, he saw the Blessed Virgin as depicted on the medal. He asked for baptism the same day; the Vicariate of Rome declared the apparition a true miracle within five months, and he went on to found the Congregation of Our Lady of Sion.

Our Lady of La Salette
A weeping Madonna appeared to two shepherd children, Maximin Giraud (11) and Mélanie Calvat (14), in the French Alps. She entrusted them with a public warning about blasphemy and Sunday observance and a private secret each.

Our Lady of Lourdes — The Apparitions
Eighteen apparitions to St. Bernadette Soubirous at the grotto of Massabielle. The spring she uncovered has been the site of 7,000+ examined cures and 72 cures recognised as miraculous — most recently Antonia Raco (2025).

Our Lady of Champion (Our Lady of Good Help) — Champion, Wisconsin
The only approved Marian apparition in the United States: the Blessed Virgin appeared three times in October 1859 to Adele Brise, a Belgian immigrant of twenty-eight, in the woods of northeastern Wisconsin — 'I am the Queen of Heaven, who prays for the conversion of sinners' — and asked her to teach the children of the frontier. Twelve years later the Peshtigo fire burned to the chapel fence and stopped. Approved by Bishop Ricken of Green Bay on 8 December 2010.

Our Lady of Filipov (Filippsdorf)
The Blessed Virgin Mary appeared to Magdalena Kade, a 30-year-old peasant woman bedridden with incurable illness in northern Bohemia. 'My child, your sickness is at an end.' She rose instantly cured. The apparition was approved by Pope Pius IX in 1885.

Our Lady of Hope of Pontmain
In the middle of the Franco-Prussian War, with German troops advancing on Laval, the Virgin Mary appeared above a barn to four village children. A written message in the sky: 'Pray, my children. God will soon answer you.' Within hours the German advance halted.

Our Lady of Mercy of Pellevoisin
Fifteen apparitions to Estelle Faguette, a housemaid dying of tuberculosis, who was healed on the fifth night and shown the scapular of the Sacred Heart. Her cure was recognised as miraculous in 1983; the devotion received the Holy See's nihil obstat in August 2024.

Our Lady of Gietrzwałd
The only Vatican-recognised apparition in which the Blessed Virgin spoke in Polish — to two girls in a Warmian village under Prussian rule during the Kulturkampf. She asked for the daily Rosary. Approved by the local bishop in 1977; confirmed by the Vatican in 2024.

Our Lady of Knock
An apparition of Our Lady, St. Joseph, St. John the Evangelist and the Lamb upon the altar, witnessed by 15 villagers for nearly two hours in pouring rain.

Our Lady of Fatima
Six apparitions to three shepherd children — Lúcia and Sts. Jacinta and Francisco Marto — culminating in the Miracle of the Sun witnessed by ~70,000 on 13 October.

The Fire in the Holy House of Loreto
A short circuit in the electrical lighting installed inside the Holy House at Loreto set fire to the wooden altar cloths and vestments. The fire destroyed the medieval Black Madonna statue that had been venerated inside the house since the fourteenth century — but the ancient stone walls of the Casa, said to have been carried from Nazareth by angels in 1294, were undamaged. The lost statue was recreated to identical dimensions and blessed by Pius XI in 1922.

The Bombing of the Cova da Iria Chapel
Anti-clerical militants planted four bombs at the small Capelinha built at the site of the Fátima apparitions, intending to destroy the chapel and the statue of the Virgin. Three bombs detonated and wrecked the chapel; the fourth failed to explode — as did a bomb placed directly at the base of the venerated holm oak where the Virgin had appeared. The statue was untouched.

Our Lady of Beauraing
Thirty-three apparitions of Our Lady — 'the Virgin of the Golden Heart' — to five Belgian schoolchildren over five weeks. Recognised by the local bishop in 1949.

Our Lady of Banneux — Virgin of the Poor
Eight apparitions to Mariette Beco (11) in a poor working-class garden in eastern Belgium. The Lady identified herself as 'the Virgin of the Poor' and revealed a spring 'for all nations, for the sick.'

Three Unexploded Bombs at Our Lady of the Pillar
During the Spanish Civil War, a Republican aircraft dropped three 100-pound aerial bombs on the Basilica of Our Lady of the Pillar at Zaragoza. Two struck the basilica; a third fell into the Plaza del Pilar. None of the three exploded. Two remain on display inside the basilica, hung on the columns of the north nave.

Our Lady of Zeitoun
For three years a luminous figure of a woman appeared over the domes of a Coptic church in a Cairo suburb, seen by hundreds of thousands of Christians and Muslims and photographed — the most-witnessed apparition in history. Recognised by the Coptic Orthodox Church and its Catholic patriarch.

The Apparitions of Betania — Our Lady, Reconciler of Peoples
Beginning on 25 March 1976 the Blessed Virgin appeared under the title 'Mary, Reconciler of Peoples' to María Esperanza Medrano de Bianchini at the Finca Betania near Cúa, and on 25 March 1984 to more than a hundred people at once. Bishop Pío Bello Ricardo of Los Teques approved the apparitions as supernatural on 21 November 1987, after interviewing nearly five hundred witnesses himself.

Our Lady of Cuapa
Six apparitions to Bernardo Martínez, a sacristan of fifty, in the months after the Sandinista revolution: the Rosary in the family, forgiveness, and a warning that Nicaragua would suffer if it did not change. Approved by the Bishop of Juigalpa in 1982.

Our Lady of Kibeho
The only Vatican-recognised Marian apparition on the African continent. Mary appeared to three Rwandan schoolgirls as 'Nyina wa Jambo' — Mother of the Word — including a horrific 1982 vision of bodies in the hills that, in retrospect, foretold the 1994 Rwandan genocide.

Medjugorje — the Queen of Peace
Since 24 June 1981 six young people have reported apparitions of the Virgin as Queen of Peace; tens of millions have come. After forty years of caution the Holy See granted the devotion a nihil obstat in September 2024 — without ruling that the apparitions are supernatural.

Our Lady of the Rosary of San Nicolás
Some 1,800 messages to Gladys Quiroga de Motta, a housewife with four years of schooling, from 25 September 1983: the Rosary, the Eucharist, Scripture. Approved by the Bishop of San Nicolás on 22 May 2016 — the most recent approval of a Marian apparition.
