On Easter Sunday 1331, at the parish church of St. Martin in the small Burgundian village of Blanot, a consecrated host being received by an elderly woman fell from the small cloth held under her chin onto the altar cloth below. The priest moved to retrieve it; instead of a host, he found a permanent bright red bloodstain spreading on the linen. He cut out the stained section and preserved it.
The Avignon pope John XXII ordered an investigation; the relic was authenticated. The bloodstained altar cloth has been preserved at the parish church of Blanot for nearly seven centuries and is still publicly displayed.
