Eucharistic — The Holy Blood of Bois-Sainte-Marie

The Holy Blood of Bois-Sainte-Marie
11th–12th century cult · Église Notre-Dame de Bois-Sainte-Marie, Burgundy, France
Status: approved holy see

The Romanesque church of Notre-Dame de Bois-Sainte-Marie in the Mâconnais hills of southern Burgundy preserves a small relic of the Holy Blood — by tradition gathered at Calvary and transmitted through the Byzantine East to Cluniac monks, who gave it to this small daughter house of Cluny. The cult is associated with the Cluniac foundation period (11th–12th century). Bois-Sainte-Marie remains a quiet rural pilgrimage site; the relic is exposed on the feast of Pentecost.
