On May 1, 1992, drops of fresh blood were found beside the tabernacle of the parish of Santa María y Caballito Almagro in Buenos Aires. The substance was preserved; the parish priest reported the event to the auxiliary bishop. This was the first of three Eucharistic phenomena at the same parish (also 1994 and 1996), all investigated under the authority of then-Archbishop Jorge Mario Bergoglio (the future Pope Francis), who as Archbishop ordered the scientific examination that followed.
