The plague of 1656 killed an estimated 250,000 in the Kingdom of Naples — perhaps half the population of Naples itself. In the town of Cava de' Tirreni, the Benedictines of the abbey of the Most Holy Trinity exposed the Blessed Sacrament for continuous adoration and led public processions through the streets. The plague did not enter the town. The host preserved during the adoration has been venerated since as a Eucharistic relic of protection.
