In 1379 at the small Burgundian town of Couches, a knight named Jean de Couches publicly mocked the Real Presence and, to prove it false, attempted to feed a consecrated host to his horse before a watching crowd. The horse refused the host, knelt before it, and turned its head away — and at the same moment the host began to bleed visibly in the knight's hand. The knight, struck dumb, fell to his knees in repentance. The relic was preserved at the church of Notre-Dame de Couches; the duke of Burgundy ordered the cult preserved.
