During the great plague of 1630–31 that devastated the Duchy of Savoy and northern Italy (the same plague immortalised by Manzoni in The Betrothed), the parish priest of Dronero in the Cuneo valley organised a public procession of the Blessed Sacrament through the town on August 9, 1631. As the monstrance was carried, the consecrated host visibly brightened and emitted rays of light; the plague began to recede in the parish from that day. The procession is still kept annually.
