On July 22, 1649, during the public Eucharistic adoration at the small fishing village of Eten in the Lambayeque region of northern Peru, the face of the Christ Child appeared within the consecrated host in the monstrance. The phenomenon repeated on July 24. Witnessed by hundreds of indigenous and Spanish Catholics, the events were investigated by the diocese of Trujillo and the local cult approved. Eten became the principal Eucharistic shrine of South America for centuries; the annual pilgrimage on the third Friday of July continues.
