Juan Gutiérrez was a seminarian at St. John's Seminary, Camarillo, when he injured his ankle playing basketball in 2017. An MRI showed a torn Achilles tendon. The day after the scan he began a novena to Pier Giorgio Frassati, the young Turin layman beatified in 1990, and as he prayed in the seminary chapel he felt warmth in his ankle.
Two weeks after the MRI an orthopaedic surgeon examined him again and found no evidence of the tear. The case was examined by the Dicastery for the Causes of Saints, and on 25 November 2024 Pope Francis approved it as the second miracle Frassati's canonisation required. Leo XIV canonised Pier Giorgio Frassati on 7 September 2025, together with Carlo Acutis. Fr. Gutiérrez has since been ordained a priest.
