Catherine Vigri was abbess of the Poor Clare monastery of Corpus Domini in Bologna and the author of the influential mystical Treatise on the Seven Spiritual Weapons (1438). She died on March 9, 1463, at fifty.
Buried without a coffin in the convent garden, her body was exhumed eighteen days later when the perfume rising from her grave drew attention. Found intact, the body was placed sitting in the chair where she had liked to write, behind a grille in a small chapel. There it remains, vested as a Poor Clare, slightly blackened with the centuries but otherwise visibly intact and seated — one of the most striking and unusual displays of an incorrupt body in Christendom. Canonised 1712.
