A peasant of the small Westphalian town of Kranenburg, having stolen a consecrated host, hid it in the cleft of an oak tree by the road. Years later, when the tree was cut down, the wood was found to have grown around the host in the shape of a perfect crucifix. The relic was venerated; the pilgrimage church of Kranenburg, built around the tree, became a major Lower Rhine pilgrimage centre.
