In 1606 at the Marian sanctuary of Las Caldas de Besaya in the Cantabrian mountains, a consecrated host accidentally dropped during Mass was seen to remain suspended in the air above the floor where it had fallen — refusing to descend or to be touched until a worthy priest was summoned. The bishop of Santander confirmed the local cult; the sanctuary, already a major Marian pilgrimage centre, gained an additional Eucharistic dimension.
