On Christmas Day 2013, at the parish of St. Hyacinth (Jacek) in Legnica, Lower Silesia, a host fell during Communion. Following Catholic practice it was placed in water in the tabernacle to dissolve. Two weeks later, on January 4, 2014, the priest opened the container to find red discolouration on the host.
Bishop Zbigniew Kiernikowski of Legnica ordered the relic preserved and submitted for examination. The Department of Forensic Medicine at the Pomeranian University in Szczecin and the Forensic Medicine Department at the Wrocław Medical University, working independently, identified fragments of striated cardiac muscle in a state of agony, intermingled at the cellular level with the bread fibres of the host — a configuration which the pathologists reported could not be artificially produced. The bishop formally recognised the phenomenon as a Eucharistic miracle on April 10, 2016.
