Old Testament — The New Jerusalem Coming Down from Heaven

The New Jerusalem Coming Down from Heaven
c. AD 95 · Island of Patmos (Cave of the Apocalypse), Greece
Status: approved holy see

The closing vision of the Book of Revelation: 'Then I saw a new heaven and a new earth; for the first heaven and the first earth had passed away, and the sea was no more. And I saw the holy city, new Jerusalem, coming down out of heaven from God, prepared as a bride adorned for her husband.'

A great voice from the throne: 'Behold, the dwelling of God is with men. He will dwell with them, and they shall be his people, and God himself will be with them; he will wipe away every tear from their eyes, and death shall be no more, neither shall there be mourning nor crying nor pain any more, for the former things have passed away.' He who sat upon the throne said: 'Behold, I make all things new... I am the Alpha and the Omega, the beginning and the end. To the thirsty I will give from the fountain of the water of life without payment.'

An angel showed John the holy city: built of pure gold and precious stones, twelve gates of pearl, the river of the water of life flowing from the throne of God and of the Lamb, the tree of life on either side. 'And there shall no more be anything accursed. And night shall be no more; they need no light of lamp or sun, for the Lord God will be their light, and they shall reign for ever and ever.' The vision is the eschatological foundation of Christian hope; the Cave of the Apocalypse on Patmos is venerated as the site of John's reception of the visions.
